The skies were clear when I left Rockford... but as my typical luck would have it the clouds soon rolled in and emptied their tears upon me. Eventually I made it to Milwaukee were I was to shoot Warren's Panhead. As I arrived the rain ceased leaving behind the most amazing sky. There are few cities I truly love but Milwaukee is one of them. It's lawless on a motorcycle and has the feel of small town America. I met up with Shawn in Davenport, Iowa... we rode to Chicago then to Rockford then up to Milwaukee to visit Warren. It doesn't matter how many times you bring your spoons and an extra inner tube.... your tire will always be fine until that one time you decide that you wont need them. Warren came to the rescue. The next day we decided to show Shawn around the town. It just so happened that the Packers were playing and on the occasion were beating the snot out of there opponent. A free shot for each touchdown turned into an interesting night. Some of us held our bikes up better than others.... just say'n

It's not often that my life involves the finer things... I take pride in being happy with the simpler ways and surrounding myself with good friends that find joy in the same. We drive shit box cars on snow days just to put what little money we do have into our shit box bikes as well as all of the good times in between... often forgetting about what responsibilities we might have. But when you are asked to take a ride on a brand new Harley up the 1 only to end up in Napa Valley sipping on some of the finest wine in the world... it's hard to say no.

Carlo Mondavi gathered 15 of his good friends... put them on 15 brand new bike's supplied by Harley Davidson and rode up the coast to his father Tim's place in Napa Valley. I was quick to grab a black Dyna to have my fun on. It was a great trip that involved many great people. I'm always reluctant to hop in a pack of riders I don't know because there always ends up being that guy that knows everything there is to know about everything... the man that cries at every stop along the way... the dude that believes he is the "Road Captain"..... the girl that bitches entire ride because her ass hurts.... And the boy that throw's a jealous fit when the only girl on the trip is paying more attention to his "bro".... Well there was non of the above on this trip. We rode an entire day in the cold cold rain and I didn't even hear one bitch or moan.... In fact I was the one bitching because I had already ridden in so much rain this year and was pretty disappointed to find cloudy skies in Sunny California.

Dayton Cycle Fest

Pat called saying that there was a lot going on in Dayton and I should get down there if at all possible. It all started with go cart racing in Cincinnati. It was Pat's birthday so he loaded 30 friends into his tour bus and hit the track. It was the most fun I've ever had in a go-cart. Full face helmets and neck braces required wound tell you that these things really moved. We checked out the Dayton Cycle fest the day after.

When Jonathan from Deathtraps MC emailed me and asked if I would take a stab at illustrating a difficult scenario for them. He asked if I could draw a chopper dude with an addiction problem - snorting the white line off the inside of the curve on the road. The image hit me instantly. When I think of the Deathtraps dudes that is exactly the image I get of them. I love illustrating shit that inspires me or gives me vision like this. Thanks guys for looking me up. With my front tire ticking like a time bomb.... every bump and bridge crossed was another lump in my throat. 60 miles out Pete signaled us off the highway and into an abandoned truck stop. He was having an issue with his carb so the rest of dicked around and played grab ass for a while as he got situated. Before getting back on the highway I pinched the sidewalls of my tire to see if it still had good air pressure. The slight pinch released all the air from the tube. I messed around with it for a while knowing that this tube was a lost cause. Brad was on his fancy smart phone looking for the nearest motorcycle shop. It was sunday and I was looking for a 21" tube... odds were not in my favor. Brad made one call and got an answering machine. It went something like this. "If you are inquiring about a Honda or metric motorcycle please hang up now. Here in america we are in the belief that motors are measured in cubic inches not cubic centimeters.. and the only language we speak is English. If you are inquiring about a Harley Davidson motorcycle please leave a message with your name and number if you are in an emergency situation please call my cell at xxx.xxx.xxxx." We knew that this was exactly the guy we needed. I called his cell phone and after a few rings he picked up.... He said "Shit... I'm at an NRA meeting right now... let me see what I can do and I'll get right back to you". Sure enough he called back and said he had a 21" tube and would ditch out of his meeting to help me out. We split in half... Pete, Ratchet, Steve and Meg stayed to watch my bike. I hopped on the back of Brad's bike with my wheel and Jeri followed.

When we arrived at Gary Hash's place we found a very energetic well built man. It was very apparent when we walked into his shop that he was a man of many interests. He had a soft spot in his heart for 60's CH's. Gary informed us that his first bike was a CH and that he had sold it many years back but recently rediscovered it and bought it back. After a little chat... he said let me pull out my tire changing station which consisted of a blanket and some tire spoons. He got on his hands and knees and replaced my tube. After a little more chatting we realized we had been gone for over 2 hours.... we knew the guys sitting at the abandoned truck stop were gonna be pissed. We didn't want to be rude and scurry out the door...... he was a very interesting man with so many stories.... but we told him we really needed to get down the road.

Tom Fugle woke us up early looking for his camera. We all said that we had not seen it. The second time around he made us get our asses up and look for it. Turns out Ratchet was using it as a pillow. Tom took his camera bag and replaced it with a piece of pizza for Jonny to rest his head on.

About 30 minutes after we arrived at Kung Fu Tap and Taco some one informed me that my tire was flat. I told him it was no biggy because I planned on getting wasted and sleeping in the parking lot and would fix it in the morning. Joe from St. Paul hooked me up with a fresh inner tube and I proceeded to get waisted. The next morning I woke up to the sound of Jerimiah puking all over the tire I was about to fix.

Kansas City Commentary

A trip to the Gas Station for some air revealed that the new tube was punctured. Slippery Pete's not so slippery hands and a shitty set of spoons proved to be no help. A 15 year old patch kit from the gas station was of not much help either. With the tube in and out 4 different times it finally held air. It was not a sure fix... and 80 miles an hour on the interstate would most likely mean death upon failure. The clouds were moving in and the group wanted to get on the road. I swallowed hard and hit the interstate.

No riding for a couple of days but i haven't minded cause its been 70 and sunny. 17 miles yesterday and 21 today so after nearly 40 miles i figured i deserved a kush room with a pool and hot tub to soak these bones in. After my ride with John Henry I decided to hole up at a motel for a night to heal some blisters and rest some old haunt injuries that've been acting up from the early years of wearing this hat. It was the first time i felt the loneliness and it made me say some stupid shit to a friend. Couldn't wait to get back on the road this morning, TV sucks.

As soon as i hit it this morning my head felt amazing again, the not knowing and not caring is the most enlightening feeling. Iowa has been far more scenic and even more friendly than Illinois, lots of livestock and rolling hills. I stopped to feed these guys some banana chips and a young kid pulled up. He was working on a construction site i passed and his boss sent him to get me some lunch, unbelievable.

A few miles down the road these sisters picked me up for about 20 miles of funny conversation and some luxury leather seat setting. Said thanks and goodbye with awkward hugs that lasted a touch too long and got my ass grabbed.

Hiked about 7 miles towards Durant and Big Sean pulled up in his dually as I was pissing on a corn stalk. Good ole boy that went out of his way to get me to a gas stop with a campground about a mile up a gravel road.

This is what I had to choose from for boots and my favorites have been champion work horses. I watch them all day long so sorry if its a boring topic, pretty big part of my days though.

Got to the camp ground which i have to myself, unfortunately me and Ralph Macchio are both outta luck.

29 degrees tonight before it starts to warm back up tomorrow, gotta keep this fire going.

View from the back seat. Stumbled out of the tavern after a cheeseburger and a half dozen of the cuervo specials just in time for my new buddy to chat. Tried to walk out but he said "son, i just need ya outta my town". Pretty cool cop actually, talked ex military stories over about 6 miles and he pulled into a truckstop. "well your their problem now, you seem like a goodguy and i wish you luck". He did let me know my license was suspended, however i dont know the last time a cop transported that much weed without knowing it. Im such a good packer! Good chat Jeff, nothing but respect for you.

Caught a ride on sunday to just outside of Rock Falls, set up camp and settled in for the first of some chilly nights. A few miles out of Rock Falls Sean pulled up in his late 90's ranger on super swampers. Sean was 19 with a 2 yr old little girl and a baby boy on the way but he was more concerned with finding work so he could drop a v8 in his ranger. He got me down to Prophetstown where i got a spot at the campground on the river with hot showers. Set up camp, took a shower and headed into town to find a tavern. I drank $20 worth of $1 drafts and stumbled back to camp for my first fire and some beans from a can. Nice to sleep on the river for a change, the corns getting pretty repetative. Low 30's at night, not really prepared and just when i start to doze jonny ratchet blows that train whistle or them coyotes start barking. Not to mention i was shitting like a wildcat thanks to all them draft buds, Harlan always told me to avoid the draft.

Trying to warm up. Got about 2 miles outta Prophetstown this morning and a mini van stopped with a 20 something and his mom. They said they'd get me a bit south but they needed to sell there fridge today so i offered a hand and we stopped and loaded her up. One things for sure, these folks in these small towns are feeling this crunch in our country. It heads up most my conversations.

This is becoming pretty routine in every town. They usually chuckle when i tell them whats up, so do I. This one tried to steer me around town but the neon called me in. Tonight ill be ditchin it again outside of town, who knows what tomorrow will bring.

I've been trying to ride out the last remaining sun here in the midwest. Yesterday I rode south to visit with Brian on his journey west. He informed me that he had made it as far as Paw Paw which is straight south of me. Before heading south I rode west to Seward where I would pick up a weary travelers road gift at Eickman's Processing. As a kid the family would get a cow or pig slaughtered there to pack the freezer full of meat for the winter. But what I remembered the most about Eickman's was their beef jerky. I could barely afford it as a child but saved every penny I had when it was processing time. I'd eat it until my teeth were loose and my gums would bleed..... it was so good. For some reason I was reminded of this beef jerky before heading out and made a special trip west to fetch a pound of jerky before riding to Paw Paw. The winds were gusting strong out of the west. The Locust is a pretty hairy ride without added weather elements and the wind was blowing hard enough to make it scary at times.

Up the road I could see a silhouette of a cowboy. Heavily packed each step looked as if were a chore. I pulled off the road in an open patch of grass near a corn field. He walked up with a huge smile on his face. It was only the beginning of the third day of his journey and he already had enough stories to fill a book.

After a handful of stories I offered him a ride to the next town to grab lunch. Space was tight but as they say....if there's a will there's a way. We strapped various objects to the front end and back side of the sissy bar. His 60 pound pack rode between us. With limited maneuverability and strong headwinds that shifted unexpectedly from southwest then northwest it made for an interesting 15 mile ride. It must have been a site to see judging by the looks we received.

We ate at the local Amboy diner and said Farewell

Hiked a few miles into town for coffee where i met micah. He said i dont know what your doing but your doing it right. When he came out he said dont leave, i got something for ya. 5 minutes later he pulls up with his daughter henrietta and this hat for when it gets cold. I kindly thanked him and accepted the gift. Right after that josh called wanting to bring me a gift and we Met in the corn where i hopped a ride to the next town packed to the gils doing 80mph on the sketchy ass locust. Had some burgers and some conversation then pieced out. About 3 miles down the road dave and sandy pull up and say they saw some cowboy on the back of a chopper in town and if i needed a ride. Fo sho, start talking bikes and sandy lights a joint with her tattooed hands and after shes flooded the cab half a joint later she asks if i smoke. Sure do, then she starts talking about zombies and im pretty stoned so i ask if we can stop before town. Whole effin farm full of zombies, i just kept thinking how fucking scary it wouldve been to roll up on this in the dark on foot. They ended up driving me like 30 miles plus the 15 me and josh did, pumped. Now im drinking beers.

Bodies feeling it, slept in a ditch off a cornfield last night until some rowdies pulled up with a case of Busch light. I heard em stop and they freaked out when I emerged so i drank a few beers with them to their Steve Miller soundtrack.

Hopped a ride with Louie to Dekalb where he's filming and grabbed some ham n eggs. Marched out of town into the corn where i began to realize what an enemy this 60lb pack was gonna become. Did about 5 miles sober with no music and decided to set for a bit. Puff puff and ipod in the on position put me in the ring like a fresh wrestler. Punk rock sing alongs sang like never before and deep cuts that cut deeper than ever.

Finally came on an orchard and cider mill where my lunch was given to me free of charge and was insisted into seconds of dutch apple pie and ice cream. The sweet woman asked where i was sleeping, to which i replied "i dunno" followed by her "well aint ya worried them coyot's is gonna get ya" and i said "i wasnt until you just said that". Then she gave me a half dozen fresh donuts for the road.

I just called him Bud, we were soaked together

First watering hole, told myself i wouldn't pass one. Rolled dice for shots and talked about how beans were a wiser crop this year.

Sadly Erik lost his life last night on his motorcycle. Erik was true in every way, stuck to his guns no matter what and was well respected for it. He has been an original in everything he's done from motorcycles(Fear City Choppers) to music(Hi Fi and the Roadburners) and to just giving this city style. You gave the term Fear City its meaning and will never be forgotten. You will be greatly missed old friend and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

It's been an amazing past few months. Motorcycles, drugs, whiskey, guns and pretty women..... the party just never seems to stop. I have amassed an incredible amount of photographs that I have yet to look at myself. Hopefully when the snow falls I will be able to share my experiences with the world. I just returned home from an amazing trip to the east coast. I partied in Brooklyn, Connecticut, and Dayton Ohio on the way back through. Tomorrow I'm heading to SoCal. Sorry to all the people I haven't returned emails and phone calls too.... maybe it's time for a smart phone or a laptop.... I love the disconnect.

The night before I was to leave for Davenport I noticed a broken spoke while pushing my bike into the shop. The wheel came apart and went back on the bike with two new spokes, a working brake and a much needed new tire. Warren has a little addiction to motorcycle parts so we set out early on Wednesday. We took our time to the Mississippi traveling a lot of gravel roads and ruff backroads. At times I thought my front end was going to snap in two.

Davenport is one event that I look forward to every year. It's more than just a swap meet... it's where friends re-unit for 5 days of heavy partying and motorcycles. Words can't even describe the situations we found ourselves under the cover of night. Pretty ladies, whiskey, Lincoln Continentals, Karaoke with tears, Strip Clubs, Tour Busses, Budweiser, Power outages, Mary Jane, shirtless bar parties, Cop Cars, Banana bread, rainy days and 5 inch nipples. Don't ask it's all a blur..... a five day bender.

The rain clouds had moved on so it was our time to move on as well. The party train was headed to Chicago for BBQ and Beers.

The wind and lightening of the night had blossomed our tribe into a solid fifteen horsemen. The early morning sun awoke us in time to tare down our settlement before the next battlefront would move in. Just as our path became righteous their arrows rained down. The tribe took shelter and cleaned wounds in the nearby creek bed. The hills were cleared and the bands energy moved us as unit to the Nashville skyline. Over the hill and through the woods lovers would be reunited. The battle was won and an epic feast would continue until the early hours of the next morning. Loincloths were left on the rocky beach and sounds of love filled the black morning air until it was time move camp once again.

The 70 foot stone wall shadowed our shelters from the fire of the early morning sun. A few more hours of relaxation was the result. The rocky trail proved to be more treacherous on the way out than the way in. Once out of its shadowy whom the suns heat was hard to ignore. A bro ride was in full effect. The afternoon swimming hole developed into a shanty town through until the next morning. There we reunited with the Shitheads from Florida and a few midnights riders that had to take care of some business before leaving Chicago. A violent storm chased them into camp. The howling of the wind, crashing of the waves and the rolling thunder made for good sleep on this night.
